The Power of Women Together

I want my daughters to know their worth, their strength, their freedom.

I want them to see the power they have in this world to change what’s not right. To speak up. To be fully, unabashedly themselves. To not censor or silence themselves.

I want this for myself. I want this for my dearest friends. I want this for all women.

Women excel in groups. We’re collaborative. We embody “power with” instead of “power over.”

“Whatever the reason, the sexes view power through very different lenses. A 2012 Simmons School of Management study concluded, “Women tend to interpret and enact power differently from men.” And here’s the difference: Women make things happen by building relationships, men by asserting control. Women work best in collaborative models of “power with,” while men tend to conduct business in a hierarchical model of “power over.” Generally speaking, a man’s self-esteem comes from his achievements; power itself is the ultimate goal. A woman, deriving her self-esteem from relationships, considers power a means to an end.”

– Barbara Stanny, Sacred Success

I know that for my daughters to have a full experience of worth, strength, and freedom, they need to have it in groups. Groups that value them, support their freedom, encourage and assist their strength, and are supported and strengthened by them.

How to become valued and free as women? Together.

By supporting other women, encouraging our collective awakening and our strength together.

A cord of three strands… we need to weave together, lifting where the others fall short, not tearing each other down.

Women do amazing things together.

I believe this is how we will dismantle racism in our country, by earnest and wholehearted collaboration with each other. I believe this is the only way to sustained change- not to have individuals doing it all by themselves, but by collaboration and connection.

“Yet the truth is, as long as one woman is dehumanized, none of us can be fully human.” -Sue Monk Kidd, The Dance of the Dissident Daughter

As long as any human is dehumanized, we are not human, and we are not free.

Today, reach out to three friends that support you as a woman. Support them. Build them up. Work together on something that you’re passionate about. Ask for help instead of doing it alone.

We’re in this together.

Love,

Crystal
